Common SAFe® for DevOps Questions

DevOps is the combination of two practices: Development (Dev) and operations (Ops), DevOps is the union of people, process, and technology to continually provide value to customers. It enables previously siloed departments that included development, IT operations, quality engineering, and security to coordinate and collaborate to produce better, more reliable products. By adopting a DevOps culture along with DevOps practices and tools, teams gain the ability to better respond to customer needs, increase confidence in the applications they build, and achieve business goals faster.

DevOps is part of the Agile Product Delivery competency and is a combination of two words: development and operations. Without DevOps, there is often significant tension between those who build Solutions and those who support and maintain them. DevOps helps break down organizational silos and develop a Continuous Delivery Pipeline (CDP)— a high-performance innovation engine capable of delivering market-leading solutions at the speed of business. DevOps makes continuous delivery possible. Indeed, enterprises wishing to deliver value to customers and stakeholders continually should master the DevOps mindset and technical practices. These skills are critical in this era of constant digital disruption and innovation. Achieving continuous delivery, however, at scale, is not easy. SAFe’s approach to DevOps helps enterprises navigate these complexities. The goal of DevOps is simple, to deliver value whenever there is a business need. Indeed, teams that successfully adopt DevOps, on average: deploy 208 times more frequently, 106 times faster, experience seven times fewer failures, and recover from incidents 2,604 times faster than low-performing teams. © Scaled Agile, Inc.

To answer this question, there are a few steps involved you must understand. In step1, identify the value stream you want to map. This is likely your product or service, but could be something more process-based, like your backlog grooming or deployment process. Think in terms of what aspect of your delivery pipeline has the most bottlenecks or what will provide the most value to your organization, division or department. In step2, engage key stakeholders involved in each step of your value stream. This might include architects, developers, IT ops members, and members of the security team. The goal is to bring together people who work on different phases to guide their understanding of their inter-dependencies. In step3, create a current state map by breaking your value stream into five to 10 segments that represent what it takes to deliver your product or service to the customer. Within each segment, record the activity and estimated time required to perform that task. This will help visualize where the process delays are in your value stream.
